Hannah Cannon

The Ohio Relatives

The John Cannon Family

John Cannon married Hannah Harrison in Ohio about 1851.  They had two children, Mary and James, in Ohio before moving to Wisconsin with the rest of the James Cannon family.  They had three more children in Wisconsin, Elizabeth, John B. and Edward.  An epidemic of cholera took three of their five children in Wisconsin.  Their graves, in St. Edward Cemetery at Mackville, Wisconsin, are shown in the photo (bottom left).  Disillusioned by this tragedy, John and Hanna moved back to Ohio near her family.  In Ohio, they had four more children:  John B., Lula M., Peter M., and Alice A. Cannon (or Canning, a spelling variation they sometimes used.)  Inscriptions:  Elizabeth, daughter of J. & H. Cannen, died Aug 27, 1863, 7 yr, 9 mo, 11 da;  John Cannen, son of J. & H. Cannen, died Sept. 5, 1863;  Mary, daughter of J. & H. Cannen, died Sept. 7, 1863, 11 yr, 9 mo, 17 da.

How Cannon Was Killed

An Aged Resident Meets With A Fatal Accident

Yesterday at Salineville, John Cannon, of this city, aged 65, met with his death by being run over by a freight train.  Later particulars have come to hand by which it is learned that Mr. Cannon had been an employe [sic] of the C. & P. Co., at and about Salineville, ever since it was built, until within the past two years, when he removed to this city.  It seems he had some property in Haytl, a suburb of Salineville, and had gone there on the 9 train to attend to some matters in regard to it.  He met so many of his old acquaintances about the depot and yards that he did not get started from the depot until nearly time for the arrival of the east bound passenger train, due there about 12 o’clock, and by that time the freights were being placed on switches to allow her passage.  Two tracks were thus being used, and he stepped off to the third track just in time to be caught by another east bound freight, which ran over him, smashing one arm and cutting off both legs close up to the body.  He lived but a few moments after being injured.  The remains were brought to his home in this city last evening from whence they will be taken back to Salineville on Monday morning next, for interment in the Catholic cemetery there.  The services will however be performed at the Catholic church here before departure.  The deceased was aged about 65 years and leaves a wife and family of seven children, all grown up.

The Ohio Cousins

The two pictures on this page belonged to Eliza (Bley) Glasnap, daughter of Ellen (Cannon) Bley.  She had inherited them from her mother.  She always called them “the Ohio relatives”, not knowing exactly how they fit into the family.  The studio identifications on the photos led us to East Liverpool, Ohio, where we found records of the family.
