The Cannon’s Ancestral Home in

Rosbeg and Glen Head, County Donegal, Ireland

Rosbeg  Is Located On the Dawros Peninsula of Donegal

Today Rosbeg is a quiet little resort area amid beautiful surroundings, situated three miles south-west of Portnoo on the much indented shore of Dawros Bay.  The sandy beach which fringes the bay offers excellent bathing and good fishing for brown trout is available on the lakes of the district.  There’s even a golf course close by.  It’s a place that offers peacefulness and rest to those seeking a respite from their busy work schedules.

Our Cannon ancestors lived in a beautiful corner of our world in that far northern part of Ireland.  Perhaps the beauty of the sea helped to bring a little comfort into their lives and offered a feeling of respite to them, also, as they struggled through those years of religious and political persecution directed at them as Catholics, as well as the Great Irish Potato Famine that followed.  They came to America on the heels of the famine in search of a better life here.   But problems are a part of life, and they had their share of them in America, also.  These pages are dedicated to their faith and courage as they “fought the good fight”, to build a better heritage for their descendants.

The Thatched-Roof Homes of Rosbeg, Ireland

John Sayles imaginative movie, The Secret of Roan Inish, was filmed in Rosbeg, Donegal, Ireland and the surrounding area.  The charm and beauty of the area as well as the myth and magic of the local folklore is brilliantly blended together to portray the flavor of our Donegal heritage.  These thatched-roof cottages played an integral part in that movie.  They give us a feel for how our ancestors who came from Rosbeg lived.  These cottages were just off the shore of the Island of Roan Inish in the movie.  The one in the first picture was the deserted home of young Fiona’s family in the movie.  It was one of a complex of cottages, as shown in the next picture.
